Toward geometric structure-preserving simulation of interconnected
mechanical systems

Abstract:
Many mechanical systems can be viewed as interconnected
collections of sub-systems. It is often advantageous to model such systems
at the level of sub-systems with interaction forces and constraints.
Unfortunately, most current methods for deriving structure-preserving
numerical integrators are ill-equipped to handle external forces and
possibly non-holonomic constraints. This talk examines recent developments
in geometric mechanics and discrete variational mechanics which lay the
foundation for developing geometric structure-preserving numerical
integrators that can incorporate forces, constraints, and interconnection.
