Abstract:
Computational geometric mechanics deals with the construction of geometric structure-preserving numerical integrators for mechanical systems with the primary aim of improving long-time qualitative behavior of simulations. I will give a short introduction to the field, including what sorts of geometric structures arise in mechanical systems and what it means for an integrator to preserve them. Then I will talk specifically about the sub-field of variational integrators and some of the problems I will be working on for my thesis which involve the extension of variational integrators and variational error analysis.
